Kari will clear away impediments that keep you from exploiting this natural potential. There are short demonstrations and lessons to illustrate the focus of each class. You will learn:

How to see like an artist; How to draw and paint what you see and the knowledge to perfect that image; Learn to depict shape, form and volume; How to depict space and proportion; Understand perspective; How to understand positive and negative shapes; Learn about light, shade and tonal values; Learn how to depict rhythm and movement; How to be more imaginative.

Each artist will choose their own subject matter. Sketching and painting between classes will be encouraged but not mandatory. You will always receive feedback on your work, if desired.

Experienced artists will find that this class will rekindle their love of drawing and help them work in new ways to achieve their goals- such as drawing in preparation for painting. Desert Caballeros Western Museum, Cowgirl Up: Field Trip

Meet Up Location: Rio Verde Community Center*

Sign-Up Required (see below)

Cowgirl Up! In 2006, Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenberg, AZ embraced a revolutionary idea: an annual exhibition showcasing the brightest contemporary female artists working in the Western genre.

In the male-dominated world of Western Art, Cowgirl Up! turned the spotlight squarely on women’s voices and perspectives, serving up a new, deeper understanding of the American West. Over a decade later, CU! remains one of the major national events for Western women artists (see the 2023 artists works).

More than a show – Cowgirl Up! is a crossroads where artists, collectors, and art enthusiasts come together to explore what it means to be a Western artist. CU! artists ride the range of techniques, styles, and mediums, traditional and contemporary.

Click here for more information on the exhibit.

Lunch: To follow at a local cafe.

Cost:
Admission if $12
Lunch will be an additional cost.

This VAL Field Trip is lead by VAL Artists Mary Kuhr and Diane Kizewski.

About the Desert Caballeros Western Museum:
The Museum is privileged to own several works by two giants of narrative realism: Frederic Remington (1861-1909) and Charles M. Russell (1869-1926). Remington’s sculpture, The Rattlesnake, dramatizes the perils faced daily by the West’s cowboys while Russell’s golden painting, The Navajos, is one of only four done by the artist depicting the Southwest.

Here is a .pdf that highlights pieces in the museum’s collection.
