The women artists of monhegan island

For generations Monhegan Island has attracted world-renowned artists to its shores. This documentary presents a series of conversations with 16 of the Islands most accomplished women Artists. They open their homes and studios and share their thoughts on art, life and what keeps bringing artists back to this small magical place off the coast of Maine. The island itself is a reflective bowl of light from all angles, from first approach by boat it highlights the small fishing hamlet, then beckons you down dirt roads flanked by pastoral beauty and on to its rugged cliffs and crashing waves.

Monhegan’s history is a rich enduring subject for American painters, bridging the gap between the Hudson River School, impressionism & modernism. It has been coined one of the most beautiful and enticing Art Colonies anywhere, a place artist have returned to time and time again for over 150 years.
Probably best known for its male artists starting with the likes of Aaron Draper Shalluck the first visiting artists in 1858 followed by Robert Henri, George Bellows, Rockwell Kent, Edward Hopper and the reigning Wyeth family of 3 generations.

Art for the women however took a longer path. Life was hard on this remote windswept Island; in the early years the women were occupied by forging a life predominantly for the island earlies inhabitants, fisherman! No time for their own pursuits. As time passed and small conveniences started replacing their chores they also took to their paintbrushes. What you will see in this film is their amazing stories of choice, commitment and artistic excellence.
