Peggy Guggenheim - Art Addict
Peggy was born in New York City in 1896. Her father, Benjamin Guggenheim — whom she adored — perished on the Titanic in 1912, a loss that deeply shaped her life. Her uncle was Solomon R. Guggenheim, founder of the Guggenheim Foundation, best known for the Guggenheim Museum.
Between 1938 and 1946, Peggy collected art in both Europe and America, assembling one of the most important modern art collections of the 20th century. She later lived in the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on the Grand Canal in Venice, which today houses the Peggy Guggenheim Collection — one of the most visited modern art museums in Italy.
Art Addict documents not only her extraordinary vision and the artists she supported, but also her inner struggles. One of the most human takeaways from the film is that Peggy knew she was difficult. She acknowledged her contradictions and never pretended to be morally pure — only honest. Her openness about desire, heartbreak, and excess was radical for her era.
Her personal life was not a footnote — it was fuel. She used artistic, romantic, and intellectual relationships as a way to belong. This documentary captures Peggy Guggenheim’s ambitions in both her private and public life and ultimately solidifies her legacy as a true champion of the arts
